mill along peaceful river

Aside from being the most photographed site on the Blue Ridge Parkway, this old mill is really interesting! Colonial life trades and displays take you back a century or two. About 30 minutes from Mountain Song Inn, this is a good destination to link with time spent in Floyd.

Close to the inn, a drive here takes you to the highest mountain point in this part of the Blue Ridge Mountains: 4000 feet elevation. An ideal destination for those interested in an abundance of Appalachian mountain floras and panoramic views. Interesting all year.

This idyllic cultural center, located on the site of a former dairy farm, includes a renovated 1940’s dairy barn which now houses a vibrant arts & cultural facility for the traditional and contemporary arts. The Center showcases fine arts and crafts by local artists and artisans, with ongoing exhibits of quilts, furniture, sculpture, pottery, iron, glass-work, and much more. About 20 minutes from Mountain Song Inn, a retail shop and several artist’s studios on location offer a wide selection of items available for purchase.

Greasy Creek Outfitters, very close by, specializes in guided fishing trips tailored to your personal interests. EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT- THIS IS A MUST DO! About 20 minutes from Mountain Song Inn in Floyd, a visit here is to experience pure, mountain music, Blue Grass culture. Several real-thing mountain music bands perform every Friday night throughout the year. This is the place to learn to “CLOG”, to 2-step, waltz; in short, all the intrinsic mountain, Blue Grass music culture of the area meets here on Friday nights. Observe or participate ~ this is an experience you’ll long remember. If you are fortunate enough to be visiting on the first Saturday of the month make plans to go to the Radio Show, this event is like stepping back in time and does sell out.

Also in Floyd, Harvest Moon is an up-scaled, quasi food store/cafe/artsy-cultural display center! A large inventory of natural and organic food in the downstairs food store is complimented by the Over the Moon Cafe on the second story. Terrific, made-to-order light meal fare, much of which utilizes natural/organic ingredients, AND a unique exhibition area in the cafe displays upscale, local craft and art creations, many from local artisans.

Mickey G’s Bistro & Pizzeria is an authentic Italian restaurant that offers flavorful Italian dining. Dine with family and friends while enjoying the Italian traditions of food, friendship and hospitality. In the spirit of Italian culture, you may order family style dishes that are meant to be shared or order a la carte from the extensive menu.

El Charro is located one block from the only stop light in Floyd. The restaurant is under the Winter Sun complex and can be accessed from the front or the back. In the bottom level of the Winter Sun you will find a few retail shops, galleries a candle shop and El Charro Mexican restaurant. The food is very affordable and very good! I recommend the steak fajitas with the special hot sauce you can only have if you ask the waiter.

For a light, satisfying meal check out the Country Store’s menu, soups, salads, entrees, and desserts are all tempting and delicious.

Wood fired pizza make when possible with local ingredient is the highlight of Dogtown. Check their website for great entertainment too.

A wonderful Mennonite Bakery, store and deli, that never disappoints. We fondly refer to it as the closest thing we have to a Trader Joe’s but with a fantastic deli sandwich.

Local country cooking, under new management, I had a wonderful bowl of soup and a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich.

Incongruous as it may seem to those unfamiliar with our local mountain area, our specific region is a nexus of higher learning. Nearby (1/2 hour) Christiansburg/Blacksburg/Radford are homes to both Virginia Tech and Radford University. Although both are excellent schools, VA Tech is probably more well known, as it’s the home of the famous college football team— the Hokies, as well as being one of the country’s premier Engineering centers of higher education. About an hour away, Roanoke and neighboring towns offer fine schools as well.

Fishing is great in Virginia, the following article was written by a guest who comes to our area frequently for his fishing fix. Enjoy.

“What a pleasant surprise. The inn and all it offers far exceeded what its website describes. The innkeepers, Chris and Andy Moreno, are grand folks who were extraordinarily focused on our every need. Yes, it is isolated, and yes it doesn’t accommodate kids and smoking, and yes isn’t that marvelous! The tranquility and beauty of their gardens and mountains was picture postcard pretty. They made special arrangements for my “early fly fishing” breakfast which was awesome.

Incidentally, if you are looking for an excellent smallmouth bass fly fishing guide who is a consummate pro, contact Mike Smith at He will pick you up at the front door and return you safely.

We are returning in August to bask again in the hospitality and beauty of Mountain Song Inn and New River fly fishing.”
